Mountain_peakWhile checking out the Bump last week, I came
across a wonderful quote by Ruth Bell Graham, “As a mother, my job is to take
care of what is possible and trust God with the rest.” Whether devout
Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, or atheist (and everything in between), there is
something beautiful to be said about trusting. Doing what you can and letting
go of the rest. It was one of my many survival mantras during the time of my
separation from my son’s father, and has sustained me on many occasions.

All of
you who have joined the EcoMom Challenge are doing what you can do, and I am so
proud of each of you. We are creatures of habit and it takes conscious effort
to align our actions with our intentions and it is an honor to share this
journey with you. On that note, one of things you can most certainly do is to
reduce your exposure to radiation from cell phones. Not only is radiation a significant factor in the atmospheric  changes that have led to global warming, it  is a widely regarded cause of several types of cancer.

As I’m sure you do too, I fit in many of my phone calls while sitting in the car between
school, play dates, gymnastics etc., and though my sister had been warning me
about cell phone radiation for years, there always seemed to be something “more
important” to spend the money on. But a new Finnish study published online in
the International Journal of Cancer (February, 2007) found firm corollary
evidence that regular cell phone usage can increase the risk of brain tumors by
270%. So that’s just not a risk worth taking. After talking to a few of my
eco-doc friends, I finally ordered a head set from Waveshield  – and I love it. No more guilt every time
I’m on the cell phone (unless of course, Corbin is there saying, “Mom, you said
you wouldn’t work anymore.”) Anyway, tell Shelly that I sent you and he’ll give
you a good deal. You can also get the little shield that you put on the phone
itself to help reduce the overall emission of electromagnetic radiation into
the atmosphere.

I can also now talk hands free with my dear new EcoMom friend Nicole Tostevin who has generously helped me update the website (originally designed by Glen and "IkuMom" over at eMotion Studios). You’ll see that I founded the EcoMom Alliance as a non-profit organization to help empower more moms to do what they can to sustain themselves, sustain their homes, and sustain their planet. Toward that end, you’ll also see two new ways to get informed and be inspired: EM Parties and EM Quests. Through these events, I hope to meet all of you soon!
