I had a fantastic day on Sunday at the EcoMom Alliance’s 1st Bay Area Sustain Your Self event. Held at the beautiful and very welcoming Roco Dance studio, the group was small but the energy was large. The day began with yours truly whipping out my old dancer shoes to teach a fun, fusion of cardio dance and hip hop moves that got us all breathing hard and sweating good. (Yes, in my former life I was a professional dancer lucky to work with amazing artists all over the world!). It felt great to move like that again though I sadly admit I am a bit sore today. After we dried the sweat off and enjoyed some bars from Can Do Kids, Susan Fox, a doctor of accupuncture, integrative medicine specialist, mother, and founder of Balance Restored gave an inspiring presentation on Maintaining Optimal Health as we move into the winter months. I was particularly interested to learn that traditional chinese medicine acknowledges that if you eat what is in season, you will get the nutrients that your body needs to face the issues commonly associated with that season. i.e. eating more root vegetables in the Fall, helps your body face the changes in weather and buffs up your immune system for Winter. Sounds very similar to what the eco-experts of today are telling us about eating local, organic and seasonal food - yet another reminder of just how much ancient wisdom has to offer us in the face of today’s global issues. Lisa Maria, San Francisco Editor of Yogi Times shared a relaxing and invigorating Vinyasa flow class with us to close the day. It was an inspiring and rejuvenating day and I think we all left feeling better sustained for the holiday season to come.
