While walking my dog this morning I was impressed to meet no less than five environmentally conscious people riding their bikes to work - and over a very steep hill nonetheless. Dressed in a full range of attire, from heavily styled out bike gear, to slacks and button downs rolled up appropriately at arm and calf, all of these riders looked, to me, eco-chic. It is a vibe the Be EcoChic Campaign hopes to propel and instill in both fashionistas and others nationwide. The brainchild of Red Dress producer Ronnie Denn, and Chandler Chico Agency’s Carrie Liaskos and Trine Hindklev and the result of a hybrid mix of environmentalists (myself, and Carl Pope, President of the Sierra Club), and fashion luminaries including supermodel, EcoMom and Alter Eco star Angela Lindvall, and IMG Senior Vice President and Fashion Week producer Fern Mallis, the campaign launched September 4th at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

Be EcoChic brings eco-lifestyle mainstream by raising awareness of how making small, meaningful changes can have a positive impact on the environment,” says Lindvall. “To ‘be eco chic’ not only applies to your wardrobe but also to your state of mind.” The campaign seeks to leverage the power of fashion to inspire both designers and consumers to make more sustainable choices. Given that the wardrobe of a mom-eco activist most often finds me in mommy-gear-gone-meeting style, I was honored to be on the Advisory Board and share the runway with a medley of superstars and sustainability activists including, among others, the legendary Lauren Hutton, Carter Can’s Carter Ooserhouse, High School Musical’s Olesya Rulin, Theodora Richards and her mom Patti Hansen, Alek Wek and Tamara Tunie as well as Jayni Chase, Laura Turner Seydel and Thomas Kostigen. This was an exciting evening that will hopefully, with the support of our sponsors, continue to grow and manifest positive change in people’s lives on a very big level.
