During Thanksgiving dinner this evening Corbin asked if there are any pilgrims left today. It led to some interesting conversation about what inspired the pilgrims to set sail for the New World, and what, in general, drives one to leave his or her homeland. It also made me wonder if someday we might live through some sort of pilgrimage ourselves as we face the effects of climate change. Over the last few years I have had numerous conversations with global warming experts, discussing the pros and cons of various regions of the world as drought, flood, and famine become more prevalent and there is no one answer. One can not know what the future holds but I do know that as a mother, I want to do everything I can so that Corbin and his children can live in harmony with the land the way Squanto did as a member of the Wampanoag nation - the tribe of Native Americans that helped feed the settlers in the New World and led to the feast we now call Thanksgiving. So that should he face a modern day situation like the pilgrims did back in Virginia, he will know how to survive - and thrive - with the bounty of a healthy natural world before him. And we will have left his generation the resources to do so.
